SAFETY TIPS

Chicago is known for its beautiful buildings, breathtaking skylines, and great nightlife.  It's only natural to feel a bit 'naive' when thinking that there MAY be 'safe' areas.  However, as a native to Chicago, I'm here to tell you...  there is no such thing.

To give you an example, pick ANY Chicago neighborhood (listed on SPOTCRIME.com ) to get an idea of crimes commited during a one month period.

So what can you do to ensure a safe and fun stay in this beautiful city?  Crime is NOT limited to 'bad' neighborhoods.  Here are a couple of tips:

  1. Don't want your valuables stolen?  Don't bring them.  Do not pull out your smartphones, especially at night. Keep your phones hidden, especially in the 'neighorhoods' of Chicago.

  2. Be aware of your surroundings.   Theft is common around bars/clubs when individuals leave 'drunk' and stumbling down the street alone...or even with friends.

  3. Attitude is a big part of safety.  If you look like you know where you're going and that you know the territory, criminals will look for other targets.

THEN AND NOW

Englewood has seen its share of both good fortune and hard luck over the years. Englewood Station was once a stop on the premier New York Central Railroad Line, and had one of the hottest shopping districts in the city. Unfortunately it suffered when many of the once-prominent industries, such as the railroad, left the community.

Lately, though, there is a resurgence of interest in Englewood, as developers realize some of the hidden assets of the area, including convenient access to public transportation and expressways, loads of public parkland, and affordable housing. Not to mention free music concerts and outdoor films in the neighborhood's parks during the warm weather months.

ABOUT ENGLEWOOD
CANCELLATION POLICY

As stated in the very first line of my ads:

"Are you looking for real adventure? Do you want to see Chicago as seen on TV and make lasting friends from all over the world?"

Although I may have almost 300 positive reviews, and over 600 guests,

THIS RIDE MAY NOT BE FOR YOU!    This part of your journey is where the conductor on a thrill ride will tell you, 'If there is anyone who would like to get off this ride, now is the time to do so!"

I won't lie....90% of my guests who left positive reviews were a bit nervous at first. Many stated that they have this 'out of body' experience and found that the area is a bit 'scary', (even with much redevelopment taking place in the area.)  They discovered that the neighbors and overall, the area, is not as bad as they say on TV.  They have even went so far and stated there are worse areas in Chicago that they have seen, by accident!

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT is the following:

1)  If you are white, the white police WILL slowly drive by your side and ask you what you are doing in the area.  They all know who I am but that doesn't stop them from trying to intimidate the white guests and get into their heads that this is the most dangerous neighborhood in the world.  (This is Chicago....Chicago is GANG INFESTED THRUOUT THE ENTIRE CITY!  Chicago's HISTORY is based on greedy politicians, corruption, Al Capone....shall I go on?  Chicago is the most segregated city in the U.S).  So anyone asking you what you are doing in ANY particular neighborhood, to me, display a level of ignorance to say, 'you can't go where you want to.

2) If you are taking a cab to my home, YOU WILL get a scared speech from the cab driver, even an offer to stay in his home! LOL

As a resident of Chicago who was born and raised here, I have to tell you, most cab drivers will not take you to an upscale African American area, let alone, this area.

So don't let them get into your head.

MY SUGGESTION:

If any of the two tell you to get out while you still can, just ask if they will be providing accommodations for you as you will find, Chicago is quite expensive.

It's ok to be nervous of the unknown.  I'm an avid traveller and have travelled for 20 years to over 15 countries.  As a traveller myself, I institute safety precautions as I would have like them done to me on my travels.  That is the reason why I offer free night shuttle from the train.

So if you've never been in an urban area, and you do not feel that I can provide you the security you need to have a fun and safe trip for a low budget,

THEN NOW IS THE TIME TO GET OFF THIS RIDE!

I DO NOT provide full refunds for various reasons:

  1. You are bed blocking a date for many returnee or newly interested guests. (Despite what you may feel about the area or the neighborhood, this place receives many requests, daily, mostly at last minute.  If your reservation is blocking the date, then that is business lost.)                       ........

  2. Once payment is processed by Airbnb, your payment is completely gone from the moment it hits my bank.  I am constantly rennovating to increase my guests overall experience.

IF YOU SHOULD CANCEL

I maintain a 'Strict' policy which means that unless you cancel within 7 days or more prior to your date of arrival, you will only receive only 50%. This is tabulated automatically by Airbnb when YOU cancel from your own Airbnb (or other shared service) account.

However, you may have decided to cancel closer to the date of your arrival, for which Airbnb has issued a notice to you stating that you DO NOT receive ANY refund.  At that time, the ONLY option that I will allow is as follows:

I will provide a 50% in-house CREDIT to you...(not cash).

This credit will not be issued thru Airbnb.  It is something I will provide to you directly for future use.  What does this mean?  It means that you can use 50% of the payment amount submitted to EXCHANGE or even SELL to another person.   You can obtain cash reimbursement from your friends, when you have 'sold' the credit to them directly.  It will be your responsibility, not mines.

The following stipulations are to be applied:

OPTION 1:  Sell or Exchange Your Credit

  1. You or your 'replacement' may use the 'credit' during off peak seasons only....between October 1 - March 31st, based on availability.

  2. If you should 'sell' your credit to your friends, they may only redeem it between October 1 - March 31st, based on availability.

  3. The credit MAY NOT be sold to any Chicago resident.  I do not accept locals.  I will check I.D.s upon check-in

  4. The individual utilizing the 'sold' credit must adhere to the same house rules as everyone else.

  5. If you should 'sell' your credit, YOU must contact me thru your Airbnb account directly with regards to the person to whom you sold your credit and their arrival date.

  6. If the indivdual using the 'sold' or 'exchanged' credit fails to appear on the new date of arrival (the 2nd date), then the 'credit' will terminated. There will be no other opportunity to use the 'credit'.

  7. 'Credit' is ONLY applied to those who HAVE NOT received any partial cash reimbursement/refund thru Airbnb due to your late cancellations.  If you have received a partial reimbursement from Airbnb, you MAY NOT receive any additional 'credit'.

OPTION 2:  50% Cash Refund Based on New Booking

  • If you should cancel and do not receive any funds automatically thru Airbnb, then I will prorate a 50% refund ONLY if another individual books your 'bed' for and DURING the timeframe that you booked and cancelled.

I strongly suggest that individuals google my address, from the Kennedy King College, down to 63rd street.  This will give you the most updated view of the area under redevelopment.  (My address on Google is over 15 years old....and the online view is older than it looks. )

AT THE TIME THAT YOU RECEIVE THE LINK TO THIS SITE, you still have time to cancel your reservation based on the cancellation policies and may receive some payment back, perhaps half if not all.  So do your homework, make sure you are ready for your next adventure!

NEWS
Travellers Find Welcome in Englewood - Gapers Block

Robert O'Connor April 2012

Englewood is usually said in hushed tones in conversation. It is regarded as one of the most unsafe places in Chicago, and if one reads the police blotter, it is hard not to come away with that impression.

Despite its poor reputation, there are people still trying to make their way and bring people to the community, whether it's Kennedy King College or local businesses.

One woman turned her grandmother's home into a place where travelers could come and stay for as little as $11/night. And they've come from all over the world. Annie runs one of the more popular Airbnb spots in Chicago.

The website allows people to put apartments, rooms or even just couches up for rent by people who can't afford a hotel.

CHICAGO REWIND

Great video of Chicago's past! 1948 Chicago had much to offer!
